Chapter Eleven
I woke with that blissful feeling of having nothing to worry about. A disembodied voice—which would normally have scared me shitless but didn’t this morning—whispered that everything was hunky dory, thank you very much, and I could dance in the summer meadow of lushness that was life to my heart’s content. It was a beautiful ideal, one I could gladly indulge in before it was time to get up. I snuggled further into the duvet, telling myself to go back to sleep for a little while—after all, we were on holiday where alarm clocks didn’t exist—and catch up on some much needed rest.
Then the events of yesterday and last night kicked in.
I bolted upright, a lock of my hair slanting across my face like an unruly worm. I tossed it away and stared around the room. Yes, I was still in the hotel, and far from thinking all that lushness was waiting for me, I experienced only dread. What if Cauli had made up an excuse to the police, that he’d been forced to drive the getaway car or whatever? What if they had let him go and he came after us?
Bloody hell, this is a nightmare.
I turned over to face Leon. He still slept. I stared at him, hoping the intensity of my gaze would wake him so I had someone to talk to, someone to tell me everything would be fine. He snored softly, my mojo clearly not working on him, and I felt wretched for being so selfish in wishing he’d open his eyes. For all I knew he could have been up half the night, worrying about me, keeping watch in case someone knocked our door down and burst in, weapons at the ready.
Oh, for God’s sake, shut up.
I got up to shower, dress and make myself presentable. Once I was as ready as I’d ever be to face the day, I tossed things into our cases, determined to get away from this place once we’d been to the police station to give our statements. The morning had the potential to drag on, fill me with more dread than I could handle and turn me into a nervous wreck. Or more of one than I already was. I shook from head to toes.
Pacing, I willed Leon to wake up. I needed his company, his calming influence. He didn’t seem fazed by Cauli and the Gang at all.
The song Get Down On It sprang into my head—Kool and the Gang—and I cursed the way my mind played word association without my permission. Despite my annoyance, I danced, albeit half-heartedly, and sang along quietly.
“You gotta feel it, get down on it…”
Was I going insane?
Leon stirred, opened his eyes and caught me mid-twirl.
“Someone’s happy today,” he said, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Do you always wake up like this? I mean, I wouldn’t know, seeing as we’ve never spent the whole night together before.”
“No,” I said. “I’m usually the groggy bitch from hell first thing, so be warned.
